Armed Forces Emergency Services(AFES)
The Red Cross movement began on a battlefield. Today, that same spirit is present wherever American troops are deployed and anxious families wait at home. Red Cross workers meet the special needs of military personnel and their families. Around the clock and around the world, we provide this unique communication network to keep families linked.
Residents in Durham, Granville, Person and Vance counties can contact the Red Cross 24 hours a day at 877-873-3651 in the event of an emergency such as the death or serious illness of an immediate family member. Red Cross emergency messages provide military personnel and their commanders with fast, reliable information to help them make decisions regarding emergency leave and leave extension.
Important information to know regarding service members:
- Full name

The Red Cross collaborates with the military aid societies in providing financial assistance when an urgent personal or family crisis arises -- that is, when you might need financial assistance for emergency travel, burial of a loved one, or urgent health and welfare needs such as food and shelter.
